Local Government Reform Steering Committee: Overview

The Minister for Local Government established a Reform Steering Committee and four working groups to progress reform and improve sustainability in the local government sector.

Minister Castrilli has requested that the Steering Committee complete its work and report to him by December 2009.

Outcomes and significant tasks to be undertaken by the Committee also include:

• Develop best practice models and guidelines to assist local governments with consideration of voluntary amalgamation and reduction in the number of elected members.
• Undertake an assessment of the structure of local government in WA including both local and regional boundaries.
• Examine options to maintain local community identity and greater community representation including consideration of community-based committees.
• Prepare detailed proposals for amending the local government legislation to facilitate local government sustainability.
